Friday October 26th - Parking will be available after 5:00 at the US Airways Parking Garage for all athletes. This garage is located behind the US Airways coporate offices.
Saturday October 27th - Parking will be available all day at the US Airways Parking Garage for all athletes. This garage is located behind the US Airways coporate offices.
There is also general parking available all along Mill Avenue. Bike drop off will be available at the Tempe Beach Park Parking lot located west of the transition area along Rio Salado Parkway (250 West Rio Salado Parkway, Tempe, AZ 85281) Race Day - Sunday October 28th - There are 600 spaces available at the US Airways Parking Garage.
This is a first come-first serve situation. Once this garage is full, the Hayden Garage is open along 3rd Street. This garage will be able to accommodate the rest of the athletes. Spectators should park at ASU Lot 59. This is east of Mill Avenue and north of Rio Salado.
If your spectators need to leave before the bike course opens to automobile traffic at 12:30 p.m. please have them park south of Rio Salado Parkway on Mill Avenue. Spectators are not allowed to park in either garage and will be directed to park at ASU Lot 59 or along Mill Avenue.
Swim Course:
The 1.2 mile (2000 meter) and 0.6 mile (1000 meter) swim will be an open water swim in Tempe Town Lake. Lake temperatures around the end of October are in the low 70's and wetsuits will be allowed as long as the water temperature does not exceed 78 degrees. CLICK HERE FOR WATER TEMP CHARTS
The course will be a one loop swim for both the half iron and the quarterman. We will have PLENTY of buoys to help guide you along the way. Because the sun inconveniently rises in the East at 6:43 a.m. Sunday morning, and we happen to have to swim that direction at the exact time the sun is coming up...we are going to put extra buoys on the course. Also, when heading east, athletes can use the South wall of Tempe Town Lake as a guide until the first turn buoy. We also hire the ASU Kayak Club to help on the course. There will be over 30 kayakers helping to direct you on the course. Tempe Town Lake has ledges on both sides of the lake (North and South).
If athletes get tired or injured, this is a perfect place to pull over and grab the ledge. Also, it is legal to grab a kayak to rest, as long as you don't make any forward progress while holding on to the kayak. Athletes will be entering and exiting the lake via a swim ramp with steps (similar to a big bleacher in the water) because there is not a convenient way to enter the lake from the South side.
Athletes may have an opportunity to practice in the lake on Saturday October 25th at 1:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. The Quarterman will be a .6 mile swim in Tempe Town Lake. The Quarterman will cut off the course at the half way point of the Half iron Course. There will be kayakers there to direct you to turn and there will be a HUGE 8' buoy that will will be your marker to turn. The Quarterman will go off in two waves - Male and Female - and will be swimming before the Half.

The Quarterman will do one of those loops, then on the second loop head out to Priest as normal. Go west again on Rio Salado as normal. The only difference is you DO NOT do the Mill Avenue Bridge Loop. You will go directly to transition after doing the Rio Salado Loop.
RUN COURSE:
The Run course is on the pavement 60% of the race and on dirt 40% of the race. It is a very nice, flat, well supported run around Tempe Town Lake.
**RUN COURSE CHANGE WILL BE POSTED BEFORE THE RACE**
The out-and-back portion of the run course will no longer be on the Southeast side of the lake (see map above for reference). GOOD NEWS! The North side of the lake path is now complete and is groom dirt along the lake!! We will be going east under Rural Bridge on the North side of the lake, then back West, the same way.
At the two bike course aide stations, there will be water bottles, Lemon Lime Gatorade Edge bottles, bananas, and Gu shots. There will be a water bottle drop off 100 meters before the aide stations. Please throw your water bottles onto the side walk and not onto the road.
Starting from the South side of Tempe Town Lake, athletes will exit the transition area heading West. Go west on Rio Salado, north on Priest, east on the service drive of the 202, North on Center, west on Washington and south on Priest.
Then head east on Rio Salado. Turn right on McClintock and head South towards University. Just before University there will be a turn around. After completing the turn around you will be heading north back towards Rio Salado. At Rio Salado turn right and head East. Turn around at Price Road. This is where your first bike aide station will be located. After completing the turn around you will be heading west. Head west until Mill. Turn North on the Historic Mill Avenue bridge where thousands of fans will be cheering you on (hot corner!). You will Continue North on Mill until another turn around. After completing the turn around you will now be heading South. Ride south until Curry where you will turn right and head west, but only for a short distance. You will take a left turn and head south on Lakeview, going under the Mill Avenue Bridge on Lakeview and popping out on Curry. You will turn right on Curry and head east. At College you will turn left and head north. You will ride north until reaching another turn around. This is where your second bike aide station will be located. After completing the turn around you will be heading south back towards Curry. At Curry you will turn right and head west. At Lakeview you will turn left and head south, popping back out on Curry. At Curry you will turn right and head east, but only for a short distance, because at Mill you will turn right and head south. At Rio Salado you turn right and head west, passing by the finish line. Turn into the transition area and exit if you've completed your 56 miles or keep going to get the distance.
On the bike course, we will be serving Gatorade Edge Sport Top bottles that are designed to fit in your water bottle cage. You can throw your empty water bottle at the aide stations only, and pick up a new bottle. We will also have bananas, Gu shots, and new water bottles for you.
PAY ATTENTION TO THIS!! - This is how you get rid of and receive your water/gatorade bottles on the bike course. Many people have not had a bike aide station before, so this will be new for you. Starting with Aide Station One on the Bike at Rio Salado and Price - As you are riding east, you will have 100 meters before the turn around to get rid of your used water bottles.
Throw your water bottles off of the road and on to the side walk before the turn around. Going west after the turn around, the aide station will be on your left hand side. If you don't need aide, stay to the north side of the road. Bike Tech Support: Landis Cyclery will be supplying bike tech support for all athletes on the course. This means that they will be in transition with air tanks, and on site for general last minute details. They will also be on the course with extra tubes, wheels, and for general SAG wagon detail.
This is an extra service we are providing for the event, please do not rely solely on this service. Be prepared to fix your own flats, fill you tubes with air, etc.
Run Course: The run course for the 2006 will be a two loop for the Half Iron and one loop for the Quarterman. There will be aide stations every mile on the course. The run course will feature 50% trail/running path and 50% pavement running path along Tempe Town Lake.
We will be serving pre-mixed Lemon Lime Gatorade and water with plenty of Ice! All liquids will be served out of cups, on the run course. There will be Gu shots on the run course, plus bananas, pretzels, and Coke to change up your pallet!

Each athlete will have a pre-assigned bike rack space with signs directing the athlete to the row. Each year at Soma, we offer a section of 100 extra spaces for first come/first serve if you would like to move your bike to a more open area. The transition area is approximately 100 meters from the swim enter/exit ramp. For the safety of the athletes and the security of their equipment, a strick "Athlete Only" rule will be enforced. No one other than registered athletes will be allowed at any time in the transistion area.
All relay team members MUST BE PRESENT at the athlete check-in/packet pick up at the SAME TIME! We repeat, you must all be at registration at the same time to check in. NO EXCEPTIONS. You will not be able to pick up a team members packet for them. Relay Swimmers will go in the Eighth wave. The "baton" that you will be passing among team members is your ChampionChip band that goes around your ankle. The swimmer must cross the mat in transition and exchange the chip next to their cyclist's bike rack. Which means that the cyclist will be waiting in the transition area for the swimmer. The swimmer will hand off the chip, then gather their things and exit the transition area without interferring with other triathletes. Same goes for the Bike to Run Exchange. The cyclist must run over the mat back into transition and give the ChampionChip to the runner who will exit through the run exit.
We will be awarding the top three overall relay groups at the awards ceremony.

If your name begins with A, go to the A tent. Z go to the Z tent. Per USAT sanctioning rules, you must show your current drivers license AND current USAT membership card (if applicable) to the volunteer at your appropriate tent. In your packet you will have your bib number, bike helmet sticker, bike cross bar sticker, timing chip by ChampionChip of Canada, and pins. We have streamlined packet pick up this year for your convenience. You will then proceed to scan your chip for varificatin and then pick up your swim cap. LATE PACKET PICK UP: If you can not make it to packet pick-up...follow these instructions... We will offer the morning of the race packet pick up service. All unclaimed packets will be considered a no show by the Red Rock Staff.
TIMING CHIPS: If you picked up your packet and do not show up for the race, you need to return your timing chip. You will be charged a $35.00 fee for the timing chip if it is not returned. PARKING: There is FREE parking in the Tempe Beach Park Parking lot on Ash St. which is west of the transition area. Also, there is another parking lot further west, just underneath the light rail tracks. There is paid parking throughout downtown Tempe.

Q: Is packet pick up mandatory Friday or Saturday?
A: Absolutely. remember to contact Sharon by Thursday, October 23, 5:00pm pst to hold your slot and packet. Please call Sharon at 248.437.4524 if you need to pick up your packet on race day.
Q: What am I picking up at "Packet Pick Up"?
A: All athletes will recieve their bib number, helmet and bike stickers, their timing chip by ChampionChip of Canada- for scoring/timing, a men's and women's specific event shirt, your swim cap and a great athlete goody bag.
Q. Do I need to bring any identification?
A. Yes, you will have to show your identification (driver's license, passport, school id) and your USAT membership card (if you are a member) to pick up all these items and to check in! All Non-USAT Members will need identification.
Q. Can anyone else pick up my packet?
A. NO, according to USAT rulings, only the athlete with proper identification may pick up their packet. This includes the relay teams.
Q. Can I use my own timing chip?
A. Yes, you can use your own chip. Please check it in at the ChampionChip booth so they can make the change in the timing system.
Q: Should I bring my bike to packet pick up?
A: NO. Please do not bring your bike to the registration area while picking up your packet. We will have bike racks for you to use.
Q: What is the best time to check in to avoid lines?
A: The best time is not at 10:00 a.m. However, our packet pick up process is very easy and convenient. There are not long lines. Since the bike racks are not "first come, first serve" and are pre-assigned, there is no rush to get there early. Remember - we ask that you do not bring your bikes to the registration area.
Q: Will there be a pre-swim at packet pickup?
A: Yes there will be a pre-swim from 1:00pm - 3:00pm On Saturday October 25th.
Q: Where do I park for the expo?
A: Parking will be free at the America West/US Airways garage just west of Monti's. Also you can park on Fifth Street and Mill Garage, or along Mill Avenue. There will also be parking available at the Tempe Beach Parking Lot along Rio Salado.
Q: What if my shirt isn't the size I need?
A. We will not be exchanging shirts for another size at registration this time. IF you need a different size, we ask that you see us on race day. We will do our best to have extra shirts to switch with you.
All bikes must be checked in to the transition area no later than 5:30pm, Saturday, October 27th.
No bikes will be permitted at the registration/packet pick up area.
Bike Check-in begins at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.
We will have professional security all night long watching your bikes. They will be armed and dangerous :)
BIKE CHECK IN SATURDAY ONLY- Bike check in is Saturday only. No morning of check in this year. Please pick up your packet prior to checking in your bike. This is not a first come first serve bike rack system. The bikes are racked by your bib number so you will need your packet in order to find your spot. You'll have plenty of time to get your bike from your car and find your spot. Please for the safety and convenience of the other athletes, please do not bring your bike to the packet pick up area. For those of you who forget, we will have bike racks for you to use while picking up your packet.
BIKE CHECK OUT- In order to leave the transition area with your bike, you will need to have your bib number with you that corresponds with your bike sticker. No exceptions.
REMOVING YOUR BIKE AFTER THE RACE- The Red Rock staff wants to make this a safe event. We ask that all athletes wait until after 12:30pm to remove their bikes from the transition area. This is for the safety of all athletes and for the security of your bike. When removing your bike we ask that you exit through the "bike-out" transistion area ONLY. PLEASE do not try to remove your bike over our fencing. If we see you remove your bike early or over the fencing you will be disqualified from the race without a refund. Again we kindly ask that you follow these rules for the safety of your fellow racers and your bikes. Thanks!

Cost: Non Athletes- $10.00 Adults $5.00 per child ages 3 and up. $2.00 per child under 3. Sorry but we can not allow anyone who is not an athlete and not eating into the area during the banquet. There is limited room and we want to make sure that our athletes have a great meal from Monti's and a place to sit for the awards ceremony. You can hear and see everything from the surrounding area. Bring a lawn chair for your comfort.
Where: 100 Yards South of your finish line! YOU MUST BE THERE TO RECEIVE YOUR AWARD. WE CAN NOT MAIL IT.

Red Rock enforces a strict NO TRANSFER policy. Athletes are not allowed to sell or gift their registration to another athlete. Athletes are not allowed to transfer their registration to another year or race.
Why do we have such strict policies? Every event company in the country has the same policy for a reason. When the athlete registers, the event company begins preparing for your experience. Whether it's hiring police, security, buying t-shirts, athlete bags, etc. We incur expenses immediately, regardless if you race. Since most of the Red Rock events sell out, we can not allow transfers. In theory, the athlete could sign up for the Timex Triathlon and try and transfer into the sold out Quarterman for example. It's not as simple as transferring to the next years' event either for the above reasons. Thank you for your understanding!

Six years ago, Stevens and Red Rock President, Jeff Suffolk, sat down in Steven's flagship restaurant in Phoenix to discuss the idea of hosting a national half iron distance triathlon in downtown Tempe. Six years later, the event sells out annually and is known as one of the countries best year end triathlons. Soma Cafe has opened restaurants in Phoenix, Arizona, Scottsdale, Arizona, Orange County, California, and Boulder Colorado. The Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport is only minutes away from the race site and your hotels will be only meters away from transition. However, there are plenty of great attractions in Tempe, Scottsdale, Phoenix and even farther north (i.e. The Grand Canyon!) which completely justifies renting a vehicle. Meet at 6:15 a.m. at the Red Rock Office located at 2209 West First Street #108, Tempe, AZ 85281. (from the 202 exit Priest south. Go West on Rio Salado PKWY, then turn West on 1st Street. Office is about a 1/4 mile down on the left.)
Bike racks will be up in the back of the office and security will be there to rack your bike.
There will not be an aide station on the bike or run course. Please bring your water bottles for the bike and your fluids for the run. We will be riding one 18 mile lap of the Soma course and will be explaining each turn while on the ride.
There will be three groups of riders - fast, medium paced and novice. The same will apply for the run too.
The Race Director will be describing the transition area and the flow of the race before and after the ride each Saturday.
The Schedule: We are riding first thing in the morning. Everyone will meet at the office, get a brief overview of the race course, transition and answer question. We will then leave from the office and get immediately on the bike course. We will do one loop of the course 19 miles. Then meet back at the office to get ready to run one lap of the run course 6.55 miles.
This is a completely voluntary ride and run. No sign up or waiver neccessary.
